Marvel’s Black Widow Movie Finds a Director

Australian director Cate Shortland has signed on to direct Marvel’s Black Widow film, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed.

Shortland, whose works include award-winning Somersault (2004) and Lore (2012), was selected after a half-year long scouting process that saw the studio meet more than 70 directors. Other shortlisted candidates are Amma Asante (Belle, A United Kingdom), Maggie Betts (Novitiate), Melanie Laurent (Galveston) and Kimberly Peirce (Boys Don’t Cry).

With this, Shortland is set to be the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first solo female director. Screenwriter Jac Schaeffer has also been hired to do the film’s script, which is reportedly set before the events of the first Avengers film. Scarlett Johansson also stays on as the actor for the title role.
