Rihanna and Lupita Nyong’o to Star in a Movie Based on a Tweet

Rihanna and Lupita Nyong’o will star in an upcoming buddy movie based on a tweet. Yes, you read that right – it’s an Internet dream come true.

After lengthy negotiation process at the Cannes Film Festival, Netflix has secured the film project, bidding out other suitors. Ava DuVernay, director of Oscar-winning Selma and Disney-produced A Wrinkle in Time will be directing the movie, while Issa Rae, writer of Insecure, will be writing the screenplay.

The idea for the movie surfaced around Tumblr and Twitter featuring a picture of Rihanna and Nyong’o at the 2014 Miu Miu fashion show. The two women were described as heist buddies.

Users went on to ask DuVernay and Rae to get on board for the dream movie. Soon the four women pledged to get involved.

According to EW, the production is slated for early 2018 after DuVernay wraps up the production for A Wrinkle in Time. It remains unknown if the movie will stay loyal to the crowd-sourced concept, or whether the netizen(s) who came up with the idea will receive any royalty.
